Sometimes, interpreting is an uphill climb, a tough nut to crack, a bear of a job. Figures of speech pepper all our speaking, but even when we know what is meant, do we know why that idiom (or euphemism, or metaphor, or hyperbole) was used, or how to interpret it--without throwing the baby out with the bath water? The better your understanding of figurative speech in English and ASL, the more creative (and accurate) your choices will be when signing and voicing. This interactive workshop creates a supportive, participant-centered environment to build on what you know and practice new skills.

 

Educational Objectives:

• Participants will demonstrate understanding of the standard set forth by the profession for how to prioritize facets of source text in creating interpretations.

• Participants will be able to state the definitions of different types of figurative speech.

• Participants will demonstrate how to correctly use various English idioms.

• Participants will demonstrate how to correct common misuses and misunderstandings of English idioms.

• Participants will demonstrate how to determine how similar idioms differ and the correct context for their use.

• Participants will be able to state various components of figurative ASL.

• Participants will demonstrate the ability to voice figurative ASL into English.
